The SEM in the IPCMS through some examples

Thin film and nano-objects

Biomaterials

Morphological feature of the coating, formed on Ti6Al4V surfaces after soaking in NaOH. The obtained TiO2 layer heterogeneous coating is composed on approximately 1-2 nm spherical agglomerates laying on nano-scale porous bone-like structure
A. Carrado, H. Ibrahim, J. Faerber – IPCMS-DSI – SEM image J.Faerber
Image of dual autocatalytic-biomimetic deposition process of calcium phosphate coating on Ti6Al4V alloy. This coating exhibits network-like crystals with 100-200 nm porous structure, indicating a possible potential for maintaining proteins and antibiotics that are beneficial to post-surgical healing.

Classical metallography

Imaging and EDS analysis of CePd3 alloys dopped with Mn, 1% in weight. The gray/colored background is the main phase (CePd3 + Mn2% at). The dark/colored precipates are a cerine phase (stick shape, CeO2) and a PdMn phase (diffuse and unregular shape).

Inorganic chemistry

Nanocubes d’oxyde de fer synthétisés par décomposition thermique d’un complexe métallique puis assemblés en film par la technique de Languir-Blodgett pour étudier les propriétés de magnéto-transport.
S. Bégin-Colin, B. Pichon – SEM image C. Leuvrey Iron oxide nanocubes synthesized by the thermal decomposition method and assembled in film by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique to study the magneto-transport properties.

Réaction d’intercalation (insertion-greffage) d’un complex de type base de schiff chiral de Mn III dans un hydroxyde lamellaire de Cuivre, dans le but d’obtenir un matériau hybride actif en catalyse supportée.
S. Eyele, P. Rabu, G. Rogez – SEM image C. Leuvrey

Collaborations

Salt crystals growing in a biofilm from a water purification plant. Collab. M-C Lett, M. Marchal GEN Strasbourg –SEM image J. Faerber
Nice geometrical craks of the carbon coating film due to some stresses in the film coming from dirt. The sample is a polymer film on a glass slide with, cold broken to see the film in cross section.
Collab. C. Arnold ICS Strasbourg – SEM image J. Faerber

Miscellaneous – Art & Science

Delaminating PLD diamant like carbon film on WC. The peeling of the coating shows a stratificated structure. Images in optical microscopy (DIC) and in SEM. There is a direct correspondance between the interference colors in DIC and the grey levels from the SEM (more black = more thick)
J. Faerber, A. Carrado – SEM et OM images J. Faerber
Etching figure of the Si(100) substrate by H° in the first state of diamont growing by HF-CVD.
F. Le-Normand, M. Larijani – SEM image J. Faerber
Highly oriented carbon nanotubes grown by HF-CVD in cross view.
F. Le-Normand, C. Cojocaru – SEM image J. Faerber
Structures grown by a prolongated carburation step under H°, in the process of diamant growing by HF-CVD. The substrate is a Si single crystal, the bright hat is a SiC growing and the columar foot is the remaning Si, protected from the H° etching by the SiC hat.
