Magnétisme

Le moment magnétique de l’électron, ou spin, est mis à profit pour stocker de l’énergie, traiter de l’information ou sonder la matière de manière très fine. Le domaine du magnétisme est extrêmement riche d’un point de vue fondamental, tant les propriétés collectives d’une assemblée de spin peuvent varier en fonction des interactions qu’il ont entre eux et avec les autres degrés de liberté du système (interactions ferro-/antiferro-magnétiques, à courte/longue portée, systèmes frustrés, couplage spin-orbite,…).

L’IPCMS conduit des recherches particulièrement diversifiées dans ce domaine en alliant la science des matériaux avec des développements théoriques, logiciels et instrumentaux avancés. Ces recherches de pointe couvrent des échelles spatiales et temporelles très larges, depuis le magnétisme des molécules uniques jusqu’à celui de composites macroscopiques, et depuis les dynamiques de parois magnétiques jusqu’aux processus ultrarapides de désaimantation. Pour cela, nous nous appuyons sur des compétences-clés dans les domaines suivants : croissance et synthèse de matériaux magnétiques, nanofabrication, magnétométrie, microscopie tunnel, utilisation du rayonnement synchrotron, optique ultra-rapide, résonance magnétique nucléaire et électronique, spectroscopie d’ondes de spin, magnéto-transport, simulations micromagnétiques, calculs de structures électroniques. L’essentiel de ces recherches peut être regroupé en deux grands thèmes :

Interactions magnétiques dans les molécules, matériaux bidimensionnels et oxydes ; structures magnétiques topologiques et tri-dimensionnelles ; transport de spin

Dynamique d’aimantation : Magnétisme hyperfréquence et femto-magnétisme

Résonance magnétique, magnonique, spectroscopie THz ; magnéto-acoustique, processus magnétiques ultra-rapides.

Projets en cours

L’axe magnétisme de l’IPCMS est partie prenante de deux grands projets France 2030 : au niveau local l’Institut Thématique Interdisciplinaire QMat et au niveau national, le PEPR Spin. Les équipes liées sont également porteuses ou partenaires d’une dizaine de projets collaboratifs (Europe, ANR, Région Grand Est).
