The magnetic moment of the electron, or spin, is used to store energy, process information or probe matter in a very fine way. The field of magnetism is extremely rich from a fundamental point of view, as the collective properties of a spin ensemble can vary according to the internal interactions it has and with the other degrees of freedom of the system (ferro-antiferro-magnetic interactions, short/long range, frustrated systems, spin-orbit coupling,…).

The IPCMS conducts particularly diversified research in this field by combining materials science with advanced theoretical, software and instrumental developments. This cutting-edge research covers very large spatial and temporal scales, from the magnetism of single molecules to that of macroscopic composites, and from the dynamics of magnetic walls to ultrafast demagnetization processes. For this, we rely on key competencies in the following fields: growth and synthesis of magnetic materials, nanofabrication, magnetometry, tunneling microscopy, use of synchrotron radiation, ultrafast optics, nuclear and electron magnetic resonance, spin-wave spectroscopy, magneto-transport, micromagnetic simulations, electronic structure calculations. Most of this research can be grouped into two main themes:

Nanomagnetism : Magnetic interactions at the nano- and micrometer scales

Magnetic interactions in molecules, two-dimensional materials and oxides; topological and three-dimensional magnetic structures; spin transport

Magnetization dynamics: microwave magnetism and femto-magnetism

Magnetic resonance, magnonics, THz spectroscopy; magnetoacoustics, ultrafast magnetic processes.

Ongoing Projects

The IPCMS magnetism axis is involved in two major France 2030 projects: the local Institut Thématique Interdisciplinaire QMat and the national PEPR Spin. The related teams are also sponsors or partners in a dozen collaborative projects (Europe, ANR, Région Grand Est).
